Noroviruses are a group of viruses that are highly contagious and are the commonest cause of gastroenteritis in the world with about 1 in every 5 cases of gastroenteritis that leads to diarrhoea and vomiting being caused by it. It is estimated to cause almost 700 million cases worldwide, about 200 million of which are in children under 5 leading to an estimated 50,000 child deaths each year, mainly in developing countries.
